Let’s make the Copa America the real Gold standard

copaamericatrophy.gifLet’s start with a bold prediction: come Sunday, June 24, Chicago’s Soldier Field will rise to the national anthems of the U.S.A. and Mexico before the teams contest the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Any other outcome to this joke of an international football tournament is so unthinkable that it almost seems pointless to play the preceding 24 games.

Yet the match will not be the conclusion to weeks of preparation for the two nations, but merely the aperitif to what should be the main course in Venezuela.

Three days later, Mexico face Brazil and, with a day’s more rest, U.S.A. take on Argentina in their opening fixtures of the Copa America (trophy, pictured). The contrast could not be more marked; the biggest threat to the Gold Cup’s obvious final is an inspired run from such footballing powerhouses as Canada, Costa Rica or Trinidad & Tobago.
