NEWS: Dissidents are threatening to sabotage the Copa America, Venezuela president Hugo Chavez has warned.
Chavez (pictured) is urging Venezuelans to be vigilant against “the dissociated oligarchy” that were planning attacks to gain wordlwide exposure during the tournament between June 26 adn July 15.
“We are chasing information about this, military intelligence, security corps, and police intelligence are after them,” Chavez said on his weekly TV show, Alo Presidente.
“Those who are committed to sabotaging an event of great importance to the nation will not be able to do so. Their masks will not cover them.”
Meanwhile, the Copa America organising committee has begun planning security arrangements in Maracaibo and Merida, and has pledged that visitors to all nine host cities will be able to enjoy the tournament in safety.
Sports minister Eduardo Alvarez said: “The committee commits itself to protect the security of the delegations, journalists and visitors in the host cities. The security of all is guaranteed.”
